The economy of the Rauma sub-region is still based on industry, even following restructuring, More than 35 % of all its 23 000 work places are in the industry. Rauma town is the core of the region's economy, with 65 % of the region's work places. The most important sectors are the engineering, pulp and paper and food industries. Rauma is one of the world's leading centres for the pulp and paper industries. It has world's biggest single-line sulphate pulp mill and the most important manufacturer of magazine paper in Europe. The pulp mill also is a predecessor in environmental affairs. In its field it is the first mill in the world with a totally chlorine-free production. High-standard merchant ships, icebreakers and luxury cruise liners sailing the world's seas have been built in Rauma. Special areas of shipbuilding expertise are ship propulsion systems and sanitary water fittings. These large-scale industries provide a sound base for expansion of the local SME sector, and numerous small and middle-sized engineering factories have been established in Rauma. The food industry is characterized by long production chains, in which highly specialized agricultural and poultry products are processed into convience foods. The Rauma sub-region is also a major supplier of energy: about 20 % of all Finland's electricity is generated there. At the junction of several main routes, there are good roads in all key directions. It takes about forty minutes by car to the nearest international airport from Rauma. The electrified railway is the busiest freight route direct from the heart of Finland. Rauma port is the third-biggest port in the country, and with its ultra-modern technology it is the most efficient. More than 4 million tons of exports and imports pass through it per year. Rauma started promoting services for new business over ten years ago. An information centre jointly run by the public administration and businesses provides services for new and existing companies. |
