At the end of 1998, Rauma sub-region had nearly 61 000 inhabitants. Its population started decreasing in the mid 1980s. The recession and major structural changes in the economy caused unemployment and net outward migration, but there is still a natural increase in the population. Despite the losses due to net outward migration, the Rauma sub-region has become a base of expertize in business, education and culture. The age structure of the population in the region is in line with the national trend, though there are fewer children and more elderly people than the national average.

Rauma is a compact town. It has housing in various architectural styles from different decades of this century. The town centre has many parks and green areas. In Rauma a Finn's dream of living in a detached house by water in the middle of a town can come true. There are detached houses in the town centre, for example in the old wooden part of the town, but most detached houses are in housing estates and neighbouring municipalities; 74 % of the sub-region's homes are owner occupied. Housing prices and rents are the lowest in the county, and living space generally plentiful.
