Rauma Maritime Museum(Kalliokatu 34) tel (02) 822 4911 The Rauma Maritime Museum is located in the historically significant old maritime school completed in 1900. The first floor contains the primary exhibition, temporary exhibitions, and a cafeteria. The Maritime Museum offers visitors information and experiences of maritime history using 'information lighthouses' constructed to provide various levels of knowledge. In addition to article-based information, the visitor can access extensive information and databases through the information lighthouses. The most extensive of these resources are the ship registers and information on those who attended the maritime school. The second floor hosts the world's only navigation simulator located in a museum. A bridge as found on a 1930s steamboat has been built for the machine. The floor can be raised so that children can use the simulator and the view to the 'sea' is unrestricted. The navigators can select the ship, the smallest being a rigid-hulled rubber boat that moves at over 40 knots and the largest a 340-metre supertanker. Other ships include a fast car ferry and a large cruiser. In addition, the sailing area can be selected; apart from Rauma, Finland’s Helsinki and Uusikaupunki areas are available. Other areas include the English Channel as well as the waters off Gibraltar, Sydney, New York, and San Francisco. The swell of the sea and the weather conditions can be adjusted, and navigation can be practised at night or in fog. The navigation simulator offers the museum visitor the chance to experience crossing the stormy Strait of Gibraltar or foggy English Channel.
