International women’s café brings people together
France, China, Moldova and Bulgaria. These were among
the countries represented when women who have moved from their home
countries to Rauma met and filled the Torni Café with happy chatter on
August 18th.
Arranged by the Rauma immigration office, the aim of the international
women’s café was to bring people together, and the aim was certainly met!
“It’s so lovely that there are so many of you,” exclaimed project
co-ordinator Jaana Tuomela to around 30 women who had gathered at the café.
During this, the second such evening to be arranged, everyone took their
turn to introduce themselves and from where they have come to Rauma. Irina
from Moldova said that she moved to Rauma after marrying a Finnish man. “I
love Finland,” said the student, who has already learned Finnish well.
“People have been helpful.”
Many women felt that there is a need for gatherings like the international
women’s café. Irina came to the water tower café because she hadn’t found
another place where she could make friends. Finnish Jaana was also feeling
around for new contacts; “I’ve lived in Rauma a few weeks, so I came out of
curiosity to see what it’s like here.”
The international women’s café will take place every other month. The next
gathering will introduce the ladies to flea markets and second-hand stores.
