Numerous cultural events, museums, galleries, theatres and craft boutiques enrich life. Picturesque, lively wooden Old Rauma covers nearly 30 hectares. The oldest houses date from the early 1700s. Today a shopping centre with nearly two hundred specialist shops is open all the year round. The sea and beautiful outer archipelago are distinctive features and most of the islands are used for recreation and are accessible, for example by water bus. The open sea and the town's 5 000 hectares of angling waters are excellent for fishing.

Numerous facilities for outdoor activities and sport, sport halls, indoor ice rinks and a modern swimming pool are ideal for recreation and exercise. These facilities are provided by the town at little or no charge.

Rauma is also an important town for schools and further education. The schools network meets all needs from basic schooling to vocational education. The teacher training college provides higher education. Many different courses can be taken at the polytechnic, including professional qualifications for nursing, engineering and computing.

The Rauma sub-region provides comprehensive social and health care services. Day care provided or supported by the municipality is available for all children under the school age. The elderly and disabled are offered home care services and serviced accommodation. Social workers ensure those with limited means as well as the socially alienated receive support. Primary health care services in the region are effective, and the regional hospital can provide nearly all specialist hospital treatments.
