General information
Rauma Adult Education Centre was founded in 1916. The Centre’s aim was to
enhance liberal education and social and economic development among the working
class.
Today the areas of emphasis within liberal adult education lie in general
education and in non-formal leisure and self-development studies.
Among the 250 adult education centres in Finland, our centre is the 40th largest.
Our main centre and office are in Aittakarinkatu 10, Rauma (tel. (02) 834 4515) but
we give courses throughout the town and also in the municipality of Eurajoki. Courses are arranged in local schools as well, and altogether
in about 45 locations in Rauma area. The Adult Education Centre is owned
by the Town of Rauma.
Every year about 4,500 participants enrol on over 500 different courses arranged
by the Centre. There are about 11 full-time employees, including the office staff
and Rauma Art School
(for children aged from 7 to 16 years). Teaching is provided by 4 full-time teachers
and some 150 part-time teachers and visiting lecturers.
Courses
The Centre provides liberal education for adults on their leisure time and gives
people an opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a particular field. The
courses are given on the following fields:
Society and environmental studies
(history, culture, nature, camping, etc.)
Languages
(Finnish, Swedish, English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Estonian,
Portuguese, Thai, Hebrew,)
Textile and Handicraft
(sewing, weaving, spinning, embroidery, patchwork, lace-making, felting, textile
colouring, textile printing, etc.)
Arts
(literary art, dramatic art, photography, painting, graphic art, sculpture,
porcelain painting, wood painting, ceramics, stained glass, calligraphy, bookbinding, willow
weaving)
Music
(singing, instrumental music)
Arts for Children
Woodwork, Stone Dressing and IT
Physical Exercise and Dance
(fitness training, yoga, taiji, jive, waltz, etc.)
Open University courses organized by the Centre offer adults an opportunity to
attend degree-level studies irrespective of their basic education.
Examinations for the national language certificates are arranged at the Centre.
Elementary and intermediate courses in Finnish are available for foreign students.
Teaching is either in Finnish or in a supportive language (mostly English). You
can of course participate also in other language courses (eg. Spanish, French,
German) - the more advanced they are, the less Finnish is used in teaching. In addition to courses, the Centre arranges lectures, exhibitions and concerts.
The courses vary in length and commence at different times throughout the year. Most courses take place in the evenings and at weekends, but there are also many
morning and afternoon courses for senior citizens, the unemployed, shift workers
etc.
The course fees vary according to the length of the course. Some lectures are free of charge. The students also pay for their study material.

Heli Kajaala, tel. 02 834 4513 or 044 793 4513 (mobile), e-mail
