Welcome to Rauma - the Town with two UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Rauma is situated in the southern part of Satakunta province. The distance to Helsinki is 240 km, to Turku 92 km, Tampere 145 km, Pori 52 km and to Eurajoki 15 km. The nearest airport is in Pori.

Rauma is Finland’s third oldest town (the fourth, if the town of Viipuri, lost to Russia in WWII, is included). Rauma was founded in 1442. With its 39, 814 inhabitants (Nov. 30th, 2011) Rauma is nr. 24 of the Finnish towns by population. Rauma has its own dialect (or "Rauma Language"). The municipal tax percentage is 18.

Old Rauma, the largest surviving example of a timber-constructed medieval town in Scandinavia, was selected to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991 as the first Finnish site ever. In 2009, Rauma was nominated The Living City Center of Finland 2009 by Living City Centers of Finland Association.

The bronze age burial site of Sammallahdenmäki was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 as the first Finnish archaeological site.

The most important industries are shipyard industry, pulp and paper industry and faucet manufacturing. The tall oil refinery, Forchem company is the largest in the world in its own field. There is also a lively harbor in Rauma. At the moment, the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant building site is the biggest employer in Rauma region.

Rauma is also a town of education with the Turku University Faculty of Education of Rauma, the Tampere University of Technology Rauma Unit and the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences. In addition, it is possible to complete degrees in various fields of vocational education in Rauma.

Rauma is a genuine marine and archipelago town. The three tourist islands: the unique Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island, Kuuskajaskari fort island and Reksaari nature island, offer various services such as lodging and catering as well as meeting and sauna facilities. The Poroholma Camping Site was elected the Caravan Site of the Year 2009 and this holiday resort has reached a five star classification.

Rauma hosts high-class cultural events throughout the year. E. g. the Rauma Lace Week which has evolved around the traditional bobbin lace is today an event for the whole family.
