POTTER'S WORKSHOP

Potter Gustaf Löfman’s main product were stove tiles. Tiles glazed into a shade of brown were made from red-burning clay. In addition to smooth tiles, decorative ones were made with moulds. They were used in the corners and upper parts of the stoves. Dishes made on a lathe were a by-product.

Due to the fire hazard the working quarters of a potter had to be located outside the town area. Löfman’s workshop is also a few hundred meters outside the old town. The workshop with its ovens, furnishing, and product samples has been preserved in its original form.

The workshop also includes the potter’s living quarters, a room and a kitchen. The demand for stove tiles dropped when plate stoves came into fashion. The workshop then moved on to make flower pots. After the demand for space became smaller, one more room was added to the living quarters. After the Löfman family the building became the property of the Rauma Museum in the 1980’s.
