The degree programme in Maritime Management has been subject to quality
auditing in accordance with the international STCW 95 standard which
means that a degree in maritime management awarded by a university of
applied sciences qualifies for deck and engineer officer duties
everywhere in the world.
The Finnish Maritime Administration awards
seafarers’ certificates on the basis of study certificates issued by the
university of applied sciences and supervised on-board training. The
student is qualified as a mate of the watch before graduation. In order
to qualify as a first mate and a sea captain, the student is required to
complete the studies included in the Bachelor of Marine Technology
degree as well as the stipulated marine work experience as a mate on
board ships in international transport.
The specialisation option "Marine Engineering" within the degree
programme in Maritime Management qualifies the student as a first
engineer and gives him/her an opportunity to work on board ships and in
energy plants. The certificate awarded by the
Finnish Maritime Administration qualifies the graduate for chief
engineer and engineer duties on board passenger and cargo ships in
international maritime transport where qualified engineer officers with
good language skills are increasingly needed.
