Cautious growth in Port of Rauma traffic

By the end of 2023, the Port of Rauma handled a total of 4.7 million tonnes of traffic, an increase of just over 200,000 tonnes, or around 4.7% compared to the previous year.

– Growth in pulp and timber exports and imports of roundwood pushed traffic volumes slightly up. Total traffic was more or less in line with the forecast. The market situation for our customers is challenging and traffic is difficult to predict. Despite the challenging market situation, the port believes that the 5 million tonne mark will be broken again during 2024,” says Janne Virta, CEO of Port of Rauma.

In 2023, around 210 000 container units were transported through Rauma, which is practically the same as in the previous year. The volume of goods transported in containers rose by just over 3%. Of the total traffic, exports amounted to 3.0 million tonnes (+0.7%), imports to 1.5 million tonnes (+8.8%) and domestic traffic to 0.2 million tonnes (+51.5%). There were 909 vessel calls, which was 60 vessels more than in 2022. The average size of the vessels remained more or less at the previous year’s level.

– Despite the challenges, the port company continues to prepare the port extension of Järviluoto. The market for renewable energy and fuels, among other things, is constantly evolving and operators are currently looking for locations for the next decades ahead. Rauma and Järviluoto are an attractive destination for maritime transport operators in terms of location and potential, Virta states.
