The Finnish institute for health and welfare launched the Koronavilkku app in August. The app can be downloaded from the phones app store or from www.koronavilkku.fi.
The purpose of Koronavilkku is to make solving and severing infection chains easier. Getting in contact with people exposed to the coronavirus is faster and helps with preventing additional infections.
Koronavilkku works by scanning for nearby phones that also have the app installed. If a person that was in close proximity notifies the app of an infection, everyone that was close will receive a notification on their phone of this.
The users privacy is strongly protected. The app was made by a programming company Solita and it was developed by The Finnish institute for health and welfare, the ministry of social affairs and health, Kela and SoteDigi Oy.
