Pedestrian street season begins in Old Rauma on 24 June

The pedestrian street season will close Kuninkaankatu and Kauppakatu to vehicle traffic in Old Rauma this summer from 24 June to 4 August.

Both streets will be closed to traffic between Savilankatu and Vähäkirkkokatu. As in previous years, Vähäkirkkokatu will be one-way from Kuninkaankatu to Kauppakatu to allow car traffic to the market. Market square can be accessed from Kuninkaankatu during pedestrian hours. Temporary traffic arrangements will be indicated by traffic signs and the traffic ban will be reinforced by placing flower containers on the streets.

Unlike in previous years, the section of Kuninkaankatu between Isokirkkokatu and Vähäkirkkokatu will also be a pedestrian area. The Market Square car park will remain in use, but will exceptionally be accessed from the Vähäkirkkokatu side.

Residents living in the area between Raumanjoki and Kuninkaankatu will be able to access their properties from behind the Rautla building, i.e. Kauppahuone River and Café Sali, along Vähäkirkkokatu, Vähäkoulukatu and Isokirkkokatu. The route will be two-way during the time period.

– It is hoped that this will reduce through-traffic and calm the pedestrian zone. At the same time, it will improve the safety and amenity of the area,” says Jari Salminen, works manager.

– The time period and the changes to the street layout are in line with the application from the Rauman Yrittäjät association. This year, shops in the pedestrian zone will also have the opportunity to place their sales points or furniture on the pavement next to their shop, but not on the roadway side, says Riikka Pajuoja, Planning Manager.

It is recommended to leave your car at home or in the public parking areas in and around Old Rauma during the promenade period. The temporary car park on the shopping centre site along Valtakatu will be extended to cater for summer visitors. The centre is also easily accessible by Gyyt buses. Gyyt is completely free of charge during July. Summer timetables for local transport can be found at www.rauma.fi/rauman-gyyt.
