The major renewal of Rauma’s Central Park continued at the end of March after the winter break, when installation of a new fence along Hallikatu began. In April, installation of new playground equipment started at the site. At the same time, green areas and stone paving are being built, and the water basin of the Tasala Vilkk and Hakkri Iiro statue is being renovated.

– The renewal will significantly change the park compared to before. Many new playground facilities will be available for children, and new plantings will make the park more lively, says Petteri Kuusisto, Construction Engineer.

Construction work began at the end of May 2025. The project is progressing on schedule, and the renovation is expected to be completed by mid‑June.

Playground Offers Activities for Children of All Ages

The renewed playground area is divided into three climbing‑themed zones and offers a wide range of activities for children of all ages.

For younger children, the area includes an accessible carousel, a small hill slide and balance cubes. The park will also have a larger multi‑play structure with climbing towers, a trampoline and a small play hut. The third playground area includes a carousel‑style climbing structure, a low climbing and balance track, and a rope swing.

The park area has also been designed to be accessible and barrier‑free.

– The paths are made of concrete, which makes it easier to move around with prams or walking aids, Kuusisto adds.

Diverse and Sustainable Plantings Bring Life to the Area

Tree planting started after May Day with ornamental cherry trees. Cherry park areas on both sides of the café building will create an impressive view from spring to autumn.

In addition to cherry trees, Central Park will be planted with other trees such as Freeman maple, red ash and rowan. Six planted areas will also be built next to seating walls. These dynamic plantings represent a more sustainable and natural way to use plants in an urban environment.

– The selection of plants is rich, with flowers from spring to autumn. Even in winter, the area remains interesting, as different grasses add beautiful structure, says Mari Pohjalainen, City Gardener.
