The Union of Local Youth Councils in Finland has awarded the City of Rauma the Youth Council-Friendly Municipality certificate. The recognition is granted to municipalities that actively promote youth participation and provide good operating conditions for youth councils. The certificate is valid for two years at a time.

Rauma’s youth services have carried out long-term work to strengthen young people’s opportunities to participate and influence decision-making. The city provides the youth council with good conditions to operate and opportunities to influence decision-making.

– Receiving this recognition is truly great. In Rauma, we have excellent conditions for youth council activities, and their role has grown in recent years. The youth council is an active actor in Rauma, and its work supports young people’s influence and brings young people together, says Youth Director Rea Poikonen.

Youth Council Makes Young People’s Voices Heard

The Rauma Youth Council has acted as an expert group on youth issues since 1998 and is one of the city’s statutory participation bodies. It conveys young people’s views to decision-making by working in various working and steering groups, representing youth in decision-making bodies, and participating in the Children and Young People’s Consultation Day.

– The Children and Young People’s Consultation Day is a unique event in Rauma where decision-makers and officials can hear directly from children and young people. At the same time, it strengthens cooperation between different actors. During the event, children, young people and decision-makers work together on questions related to the day’s themes. The topics are developed together with the youth council and the Children’s Parliament, says Youth Leader Maija Salomaa.

The Union of Local Youth Councils in Finland is an expert organisation in youth participation and acts as an advocacy, service and cooperation body for youth councils and other youth influence groups.
