Topping-Out Ceremony for Papinpelto Youth Centre and Youth Workshop to Be Held on 17 September 2026

Papinpelto youth centre and youth workshop project has reached its highest structural point. A topping-out ceremony will be held on Thursday, 17 September 2026, to celebrate this milestone. Scheduled for completion in spring 2027, the new building will bring together the Youth Workshop and Kuovi Youth Centre under one roof while providing modern facilities for young people and staff. The facilities will be introduced in phases during the summer and autumn of 2027.
Once completed, the building will provide comfortable and versatile facilities for both young people and staff. The design places particular emphasis on durability, functionality and an appearance that blends well with its surroundings. The facilities will support young people’s hobbies, learning and work activities.
– The new facilities will improve access to youth services, enable closer collaboration and create a vibrant community meeting place. Without exaggeration, the completed project will be one of the finest youth and workshop facilities in Finland, says Leena Joki-Korpela, Architect for the City of Rauma.
The topping-out ceremony will begin with a guided tour of the construction site for invited guests and media representatives. The programme will also include speeches and a performance by a youth band made up of future users of the building.
Construction Progressing as Planned
The building’s structural frame and roof have been completed, and work on the exterior facade is currently underway. Inside, partition walls, plastering, painting and building services installations are in progress. The next phase will focus on interior finishing work, while outdoor areas will be completed before the onset of winter.
– Construction has progressed according to plan. During the summer, work included roofing and facade construction, window installations and partition wall construction. The building will soon be fully visible as the final section of the weather protection structure is removed, says Matti Puustelli, Site Manager at Hartela Oy.
– The topping-out ceremony celebrates the work of everyone involved in the project. This is a unique facility, bringing together youth centre services, outreach youth work and workshop activities under one roof, says Rea Poikonen, Youth Director for the City of Rauma.
New Facilities to Support Hobbies, Learning and Work
The two-storey building, currently under construction at the intersection of Itsenäisyydenkatu and Teinitie, will comprise approximately 1,600 gross square metres. Built with a concrete frame and timber cladding, the facility will consist of two interconnected sections.
The first section will house the youth centre, music room and kitchen, together with media and editing facilities and staff offices on the upper floor.
The second section will be dedicated to workshop activities and will include facilities for woodworking, metalworking, hot work and painting.
The project is being delivered by Hartela Oy as the design and build contractor, with Renell Käppi Arkkitehdit Ltd serving as the principal designer. The design emphasises durability, safety and energy efficiency.
