The old fire station in Rauma, photographed in winter.

Mechanical demolition of Rauma’s old fire station will begin on Monday, January 12, provided temperatures remain above -15°C.

– Severe frost poses challenges and risks for demolition work – for example, it impairs machinery performance, makes dust control more difficult, and compromises occupational safety. In addition, the cold can cause changes in the structures being demolished, says Operations Manager Pekka Yli-Kauhaluoma.

Demolition Work Will Proceed in Stages

The building’s interior and asbestos removal has been completed. Massive demolition will start next Monday at the west end of the fire station and is expected to take about two weeks.

  • Phase 1: Demolition of the hose tower (approx. 4 days)
  • Phase 2: Demolition of the regional emergency response center (approx. 5 days)
  • Phase 3: Removal of training facilities and other structures (approx. 2 days)
  • Final Phase: Demolition of the remaining fire station structures (approx. 3 days)

Traffic arrangements in the surrounding area will not be affected, but waste will be transported several times a day during the demolition process. Demolition waste will be sorted by material and delivered to different recipients. Recyclable materials will be utilized, for example concrete will be crushed and reused.

The demolition of the old fire station’s above-ground structures is scheduled for completion in January 2026. The main contractor is Rakennus Jalonen Oy.

Rauma’s new fire station has been operating in Kodisjoentie since 2024. The old station had reached the end of its service life, and renovation was no longer feasible.
