Rauma’s maritime destinations are an important part of the city’s identity, tourism and leisure activities.

The City of Rauma is working systematically to ensure that the archipelago’s tourist destinations remain safe, functional and pleasant. According to the City of Rauma’s Archipelago Master Plan 2030, resources are being focused on four islands: Kylmäpihlaja, Kuuskajaskari, Reksaari and Nurmes.

– Kylmäpihlaja and Kuuskajaskari have a large number of buildings that require ongoing maintenance. Some of the buildings on Kuuskajaskari are also protected, which means their upkeep requires additional investment, says Property Manager Susanna Suoramaa.

This year, preparations for the start of the tourism season are focused in particular on Kuuskajaskari. In May, before the holiday season begins, work includes a drainage renovation for the café building and improvements to ventilation in the holiday cottages. Later in the summer, smaller repair works are planned for service buildings, along with general environmental improvements. Special attention is paid to the island’s nature, history and accessibility in all refurbishment work.

– Kuuskajaskari’s fortress island offers many opportunities for spending either a day or a longer stay. The island has excellent routes, one of which is accessible. Accessibility has also been taken into account in the renewal of the eastern pier, Suoramaa emphasises.

Scheduled ferry services transport passengers from Rauma to the island of Kuuskajaskari in approximately half an hour.

The installation schedule for the new pier is currently expected to move to late summer, as it is not intended to take place during the busiest boating season. Other refurbishment work is likewise scheduled either before or after the main tourism and outdoor recreation season.

– After the winter, the condition of the piers is inspected and any necessary repairs are carried out before the tourism and hiking season begins. Hiking trails are checked and, for example, trees that may have fallen during the winter are removed. Each spring, we also visit the islands with local entrepreneurs to discuss possible needs and ideas for the upcoming summer season, Suoramaa says.

On the lighthouse island of Kylmäpihlaja, renovation work focuses on the roof repair of the lower part of the lighthouse. Kylmäpihlaja features several scenic cabins as well as a high-quality lighthouse hotel. The ongoing roof renovation aims to prevent moisture damage and ensure the long-term usability of the buildings.

The renovation work that began in May is scheduled to be completed in June. The project does not affect visitors to the island. According to Suoramaa, further maintenance work is also planned and will most likely take place in late summer or early autumn.

Daily summer-season ferry services will start on 8 June 2026. More detailed timetables are available on the Rauma Archipelago Transport website.
