About fishing in general

Fishing, ice fishing and herring fishing are public fishing rights and free of charge for everyone. Anyone aged between 18 and 69 who fishes with lures must pay a management fee, which entitles them to fish with one rod and lure almost anywhere in the country. Other types of fishing, such as gillnetting, hook-and-line, trap and multi-rod trolling, always require a licence from the owner of the fishing body in addition to the management fee. In the waters owned by the City of Rauma, the permit can be purchased by buying fishing gear tags from the online shop or from the service point Pyyrman

Which Permits do I Need?

If you are aged between 18 and 69 and fish with lures or traps, or fish for crabs, you must pay a fishing fee. An exception is made for fishermen who were at least 65 years old by 31 December 2023.

The Finnish Fishing Act requires fishermen to register when they pay the fishing fee for the first time. Registration can be done via the online store Eräluvat.fi or by calling 020 69 2424.

If you want to fish with nets, keep a fyke net, fish trap, longline or crab pots, or fish for whitefish with more than one rod, you must redeem the City of Rauma’s trap permits. Recreational fishermen are entitled to obtain permits for up to eight permits. For gillnetting, 8 permits entitle the holder to fish with up to 240 metres of bottom gillnets or 120 metres of surface nets. More detailed fishing regulations and a map of the fishing permit area can be found behind the links above.

You can buy the trap permits online and at the City Service Point Pyyrman, Valtakatu 2A.

Catch declaration for recreational fishing

Reporting of catch and catch data for recreational fisheries will be mandatory from the beginning of 2025. Catch data will be reported for the following fish species and stocks: salmon, chum salmon, lake salmon, trout, eel, whitefish in the Kuolimo and Saimaa rivers and elsewhere in the Vuoksi river basin, and grayling in inland waters south of 65°00′N latitude and in the sea.

Catch reports must be submitted within 14 days of catching the fish. The obligation to report also applies to released fish. The declaration can be made using the Omakala app, the form on the omakala.fi website or by telephone. The Omakala app is free and can be downloaded for both Android and Apple devices. The helpline is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-14.00. The phone number is 029 532 2800.

Catch and catch data provide up-to-date information on the fisheries and stocks of species. This information can be used to manage fisheries in line with changes in fish stocks. For chub salmon, provision is made for the possible introduction of the species into the Baltic Sea.

Commercial Fishing

Commercial fishermen wishing to use more than eight trap permits must apply in writing. For trap fishing, the permit is issued by the Environment and Licensing Board. To obtain a licence, the applicant must be registered in the register of commercial fishermen kept by the ELY Centre of Southwest Finland.

The application for a permit for commercial net fishing or trap fishing in the fishing permit area of the City of Rauma should be sent either electronically to kirjaamo@rauma.fi or by post to the City of Rauma, Environmental Protection, P.O. Box 104, 26101 Rauma.
