Baltic Sea Day
In Rauma, the sea is more than just a view. It is part of the city’s identity. On Baltic Sea Day, Thursday 27 August 2026, we celebrate our home sea through events, excursions, experiences, and environmental action.
The aim of Baltic Sea Day, initiated by the John Nurminen Foundation, is to raise awareness of the Baltic Sea and inspire people to care for it. Throughout the day in Rauma, visitors can explore maritime culture and history, spend time in the archipelago, and take part in activities that benefit the Baltic Sea.
The City of Rauma is also supporting Baltic Sea conservation with a €1,000 donation to the John Nurminen Foundation.
Free public sauna at Vohvelikartano
Vohvelikartano’s sauna opens its doors for Baltic Sea Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission to the sauna throughout the afternoon.
Visitors can also take part in the Baltic Sea Day Dip and enjoy a refreshing swim in the Baltic Sea. The aim of the campaign is to celebrate the recreational opportunities our waters provide while drawing attention to the ecological state of the Baltic Sea.
Come on your own or with friends and enjoy a Baltic Sea-friendly sauna and swim experience. Vohvelikartano’s sauna is a mixed-gender sauna, and swimwear is required.

Rauma Maritime Museum offers free admission to its exhibitions on Baltic Sea Day from 12 noon to 4 p.m.
Visitors can explore the World Seas quiz trail independently, with activities suited for both children and adults. In addition to the main exhibition, the museum’s Tower Gallery features The Sea’s Cellar: Diving Beneath the Surface of the Baltic Sea, an exhibition produced by the John Nurminen Foundation. Through photography, the exhibition highlights the nature and history of the Baltic Sea, deepening visitors’ understanding of its significance. The exhibition also features nature photographs by Rauma-based photographer Raimo Sundelin.
As a special Baltic Sea Day programme, the museum will host environmental education themed guided tours for school groups at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. The tours are free of charge, last approximately 30 minutes, and the content can be adapted to suit the age of the students.

Explore Rauma’s archipelago destinations!
Baltic Sea Day is a perfect opportunity to relax by the sea, enjoy the outdoors and explore Rauma’s diverse nature destinations.
During the day, head out to the Rauma archipelago, home to attractions such as the Kylmäpihlaja Lighthouse Island and Kuuskajaskari, an island known for its holiday facilities and historic coastal fortress.
Baltic Sea-themed literature exhibition
Rauma Main Library will host a Baltic Sea–themed literature exhibition from 9:00 to 19:00. The exhibition is free of charge, and the space is fully accessible.
Maritime Logistics Research Center’s Baltic Sea Survey
You can also test your Baltic Sea knowledge online. On Baltic Sea Day, the Maritime Logistics Research Center at SAMK will publish a Baltic Sea quiz on its website and social media channels.
The quiz is available in both Finnish and English, and participants who answer correctly will be entered into a prize draw.
Enjoy Baltic Sea-friendly food
The day can also be enjoyed through maritime flavours. The Baltic Sea will be reflected in both the City of Rauma’s food services and the dishes served in local restaurants.
Rauma’s schools will also serve a Baltic Sea themed lunch menu, featuring dishes such as herring patties with rye, sour cream sauce and mashed potatoes.
Clean Beach -campaign
The City of Rauma encourages everyone to take part in the Siisti Biitsi beach clean-up campaign on Baltic Sea Day.
Siisti Biitsi is a coastal clean-up programme coordinated by Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association. The campaign aims to clean shorelines, collect information about marine litter, and raise awareness of the litter situation along Finland’s coasts and waterways.
Taking part is easy: simply organise your own clean-up event at a beach of your choice. Detailed participation instructions can be found on the Siisti Biitsi website.
In Rauma, you can also join the campaign together with the Rauma Avainmartat association. On Baltic Sea Day, Avainmartat will organise a litter-picking walk at Otanlahti Beach starting at 5 p.m.
Rauma Port Ltd is also contributing to cleaner shorelines through its #SiistiäRantaelämää -campaign (#CleanBeachLife). On Baltic Sea Day, the port will clean its own areas and encourage other companies operating in the port area to take part. Around 20 companies operate within the port area, and Rauma Port works together with them to help keep the coastline clean.

Rauma’s street drains are being marked with colorful fish-shaped stickers as part of the Mahanpuruja muovista -campaign by the Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association. The aim is to draw the attention of passersby to the pathways litter takes and to encourage reducing pollution.
