Indoor Air Quality Repairs Carried Out at Karin kampus Over the Summer Have Reduced Odor Problems

The indoor air quality-related repairs carried out on the Karin kampus over the summer were completed on schedule. The goal of the repairs was to reduce the odor issues detected in the spring, which were related to a quality defect in the carpet material and improper installation in some of the spaces.
Over the summer, approximately 684 square meters of carpet were replaced on kampus. Replacement carpets were installed in the areas where, based on spring inspections, the need for repairs was greatest. The repair work was carried out at the contractor’s expense.
– The repair work carried out on kampus was completed as planned. The need for any further measures is being assessed as part of normal property maintenance and monitoring of conditions. We are in constant collaboration with users, experts, and property maintenance staff, says Acting Director of Facilities Services Kimmo Salminen.
Based on feedback from users, odor issues have decreased as a result of the repairs. The situation continues to be monitored, and user feedback will continue to be collected.
Background
Based on investigations conducted at the Karin kampus in the spring of 2026, the odor issues were found to be caused by a quality deviation in part of the carpet material shipment and an incorrect installation method. The repairs were carried out in collaboration with the contractor and the material supplier.
The total floor area of the Karin kampus is approximately 23,000 square meters, of which approximately 1,350 square meters is covered with textile carpet. The corrective measures were focused on the areas where the issues were assessed to be the most significant.
