A summer cottage on the beach at dusk.

The last weekend of August marks the traditional Venetsialaiset, a celebration of the end of the boating and summer cottage season. Customs include fireworks, bonfires, and campfires.

In Rauma, private use of fireworks is permitted on Saturday, August 30th, between 6 PM and midnight without a separate notification if the following conditions are met:

  • Fireworks may not be used in residential areas covered by a town plan or near buildings.
  • Permission from the landowner is required.
  • Fireworks are strictly prohibited during a wildfire warning issued by the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Any open fire that produces significant smoke must be reported to the local rescue authority. The notification of lighting a fire can be submitted electronically via the rescue department’s website or by calling 02 621 1500.

Fireworks and open flames must be used in a way that does not pose a risk to people or property. The rescue department encourages everyone to follow the safety guidelines and, ideally, enjoy the festivities in the spirit of tradition at cottages and by the water.
