The City of Rauma is once again taking part in Baltic Sea Day on Thursday, 27 August 2026. Initiated by the John Nurminen Foundation, Baltic Sea Day is celebrated annually on the last Thursday of August across the Baltic Sea region. The City of Rauma is contributing to Baltic Sea protection through a concrete action as well. The city has made a €1,000 donation to the John Nurminen Foundation to support its work in protecting the Baltic Sea. The donation helps fund efforts to improve the condition of the Baltic Sea and safeguard its marine environment.
Get to Know the Sea at Rauma’s Museums, Library and Around the City
Rauma Maritime Museum offers free admission from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Baltic Sea Day. Visitors can explore the World Seas quiz trail independently with the whole family. In addition to the museum’s main exhibition, the Tower Gallery will feature The Sea’s Cellar: Diving Beneath the Surface of the Baltic Sea, an exhibition produced by the John Nurminen Foundation.
The Maritime Museum will also organize environmental education tours for school classes on Baltic Sea Day. These free guided sessions, lasting approximately 30 minutes, will take place at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Bookings can be made by email at info@rmm.fi.
There are also opportunities to learn more about the Baltic Sea elsewhere in the city. Rauma Main Library will host a Baltic Sea-themed book exhibition throughout the day from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The free exhibition offers visitors a chance to explore literature about the Baltic Sea and deepen their understanding of this important marine environment.
You can also test your Baltic Sea knowledge online. SAMK’s Research Centre for Maritime Logistics will publish a Baltic Sea quiz on its website and social media channels on Baltic Sea Day. The quiz is available in both Finnish and English, and participants with correct answers will be entered into a prize draw.
Enjoy the Archipelago and Baltic Sea-Friendly Food
Baltic Sea Day is also a perfect opportunity to unwind by the sea and explore Rauma’s diverse outdoor destinations. During the day, visitors are encouraged to head to the Rauma archipelago, home to attractions such as the Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island and the Kuuskajaskari holiday and fortress island.
The maritime atmosphere can also be enjoyed in the city centre. On Baltic Sea Day, the sauna at Vohvelikartano will be open free of charge from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can also take part in the Baltic Sea Day Dip for the Baltic Sea challenge by going for a swim in the Baltic Sea. The initiative aims to celebrate the recreational benefits of our waterways while drawing attention to the ecological state of the Baltic Sea.
The day can also be enjoyed through maritime flavours. The Baltic Sea will be reflected in menus across both the city’s food services and local restaurants. In Rauma’s schools and early childhood education centres, lunch will feature dishes inspired by the Baltic Sea menu, including rye-crusted Baltic herring patties, sour cream sauce and mashed potatoes.
Working Together for a Cleaner Baltic Sea
The City of Rauma encourages everyone to take part in the Siisti Biitsi (Clean Beach) cleanup campaign on Baltic Sea Day. Coordinated by the Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association, the campaign aims to clean beaches, collect data on litter levels, and raise awareness of the impacts of marine litter.
In Rauma, residents can join the effort together with Rauma Avainmartat. The association will organize a litter-picking walk at Otanlahti Beach on Baltic Sea Day starting at 5 p.m.
Rauma Port Ltd is also taking part in Baltic Sea Day through its #CleanBeachLife -campaign. On Baltic Sea Day, the port will clean its own areas and challenge other companies operating in the harbour area to join the initiative.
The harmful effects of littering will also be highlighted throughout the city. From 17 to 31 August, storm drains in Rauma will be marked with colourful stickers as part of the Plastic Gives Me a Stomach Ache -campaign organized by the Keep the Archipelago Tidy Association. The purpose of the stickers is to draw attention to the routes litter takes into waterways and encourage people to reduce littering.
