Taifun & Trinita

Maija Annikki Savolainen’s exhibition Taifun & Trinita delves into the history of women’s sailing culture. Seafaring and sailing have traditionally been a male-dominated world, where women’s participation has received little attention and has often gone undocumented. The exhibition’s name is borrowed from two Hai-class racing boats registered in women’s names during the 1930s: Taifun, which refers to a typhoon, and Trinita, which signifies the Holy Trinity. These boats and their names serve as the inspiration for the exhibition, and through them, Savolainen explores the history, present, and future of female sailors. 

The exhibition highlights the relatively unknown part of history of sailing culture through old archival photographs. Photos from the collections of Rauma Maritime Museum and the Tilt Flikat girls’ sea scout group engage in a dialogue with Savolainen’s photographs, video work, and installations. The works offer insights into women’s relations to the sea and explore what the future of sailing might look like as the environment changes. 

Maija Annikki Savolainen is a photographic artist and doctoral researcher born in Turku in 1980, whose work combines women’s sailing culture with concerns about the blue-green algae problem in the Baltic Sea. Accompanying the exhibition, the book Phytopia (Khaos Publishing, 2026) brings together Savolainen’s photographs of women sailors from 2013 to 2026. 

The exhibition will be on display at Rauma Art Museum from October 24, 2026, to April 4, 2027.
