Registration for Pre-primary and Basic Education, and Applications for Afternoon Activities to Open in Late January and Early February
News

The registration period for pre-primary education in Rauma this spring is 26 January–8 February 2026. Registration for basic education and applications for afternoon activities are open 2–15 February 2026.
Approximately 315 Children Start Pre-primary Education in Autumn
Registration for pre-primary education concerns children born in 2020. No letters will be sent to guardians—except to families whose child is not currently in early childhood education in Rauma.
Registration for pre-primary education is completed via an electronic form. The same form is used to apply for early childhood education that complements pre-primary education. The registration form and additional information can be found on the early childhood education website.
The city assigns each child a pre-primary education placement, which is usually the unit closest to the child’s home. Decisions about placements will be sent to the Suomi.fi Messages service by the end of April.
Children Born in 2019 Will Start School
In Rauma, approximately 310–320 children born in 2019 will start school next autumn.
– The number of children starting school may still change during the spring and summer, especially due to immigration. However, the number has clearly decreased since 2024. Over the next couple of years, we expect age groups of around 300 pupils, but the groups following them will again be smaller, says Basic Education Manager Hanna Viljanen-Lehto.
An instruction letter regarding school registration and applications for afternoon activities has been sent to guardians by mail this week. The instructions have also been published on the basic education website. Registration is completed electronically in Wilma. After registration, the city assigns each pupil a local school, which in most cases is the school closest to the pupil’s home.
A new third music class will start at Kari school in the autumn. Musical aptitude tests for admission will be held at Kari school on Tuesday 24 February and Thursday 26 February from 16:00 to 19:00. Registration for the tests must be submitted via a Webropol form (in Finnish) by 23 February. More detailed information on applying to the music class can be found on Kari school’s Peda.net site (in Finnish).
Applications for Afternoon Activities Can Be Submitted in Wilma or via an Electronic Form
Afternoon activities are open to all pupils in grades 1 and 2, as well as to pupils in other grades who have a decision on individual support. The right to afternoon activities for supported children ends after the school year in which the child turns 10 years old. Families may apply for an afternoon activity place even if their need for care or the child’s future school is still uncertain.
Future first graders apply for afternoon activities in Wilma at the same time as they register for basic education, between 2–15 February.
– Children who have already participated in afternoon activities during the current school year must reapply if their need for care continues next year. Older pupils also apply during the registration period in Wilma, where the application instructions will be published, says Afternoon Activities Manager Jutta Liiten.
Pupils entering grade 2 at Rauma Freinet School or Rauma Teacher Training School, as well as pupils with a decision on individual support, apply for afternoon activities using an electronic application form, which can also be printed from the bottom of the form if needed. Outside the official application period, all applicants use the same electronic form.
