In Kari school, a pupil in class 4B was infected with a mild symptom case of coronavirus, which was confirmed on 19 November. The contagious period is considered to have begun on the evening of 12 November. The infection is from within the family. The pupil has been in class this week.
18 pupils and three staff member are considered exposed. They have been placed in quarantine for ten days, starting from the last exposure day. Quarantine started on Thursday evening and will end on 28 November. The school will arrange distance learning for the quarantined starting from Friday.
Families were notified through Wilma on Thursday evening. Infectious disease authorities from Rauma healthcare services aim to contact parents of those exposed during Thursday evening or Friday morning.
The quarantine does not apply to family members of the exposed and they can move freely. If a quarantined person gets sick they must be tested and then members of their family must wait for the test results at home. If the quarantined person is a child, one of their parents can stay home and receive infectious disease allowance to compensate for loss of income, if working from home is not possible.
There is no reason to test the asymptomatic. Getting tested will not shorten the quarantine.
The incubation period for the coronavirus is usually 4 to 5 days, but can vary from 1 to 10. If the exposed person displays even mild symptoms, such as runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever, loss of taste or smell or diarrhea in some cases, they must be tested immediately.
Schoolwork will continue normally for other students and staff. Infections in children are rare in school related exposures.
